What are the origins of the red and white checkerboard - the symbol of the Polish air force? It was first put on a plane by lieutenant Stefan Stec as his personal emblem. His design had the same four squares but without any outline. On 15 November 1918 lieutenant Stec flew a plane with this marking with a dispatch from Lvov to Warsaw.
